in the yard....

visited the library (finally) last week and checked out these great books.  the big one on the bottom is my favorite (probably because it has chickens on the front cover.  the top one is a nice story about a young girl who homesteads, but also has a 9-5 job...it really shows that you don't have to dive into it head first, baby steps are ok too!

as i said in my previous post, i ordered our laying hens last night and i am patiently (not) waiting for the e mail telling me when they will be here.  how funny i have to pick them up at the post office!  i got the warmer light today and have to stop by Anderson's this afternoon to get a feeder and waterer and something to keep them in.  trying to go inexpensive, since they will eventually be moved to their coop (which i have to build!)

i also got two more tomatoes and rosemary, mint and lemon thyme.  potted them and they are sitting on the porch steps soaking up the sun right now...

also got the wood for my next raised bed, got that assembled and put the newsprint and some leftover shingles on top to kill off the grass so i can dig it, fertilize it, and get it ready for planting in hopefully 2 weeks.  i started some corn, snap peas, carrots and more squash from seeds this morning too.  the new tomatoes found a home in the current garden spot and got a thorough watering...

nice how i just drive my van right across the lawn, eh???

i also met a little hoppy friend in the front yard this morning while planting some impatients...
he hopped off before i could get a pic of him...funny little frogs all over the place!

DID I MENTION I HATE GNATS????

jacob's most awesome mother's day gift that he made with his own little fingers!!
made me cry!

he used his little finger to paint the whole picture...:)

i made this cute little cottagey banner last week...it reads "happy"...so sweet!

and b cause i love halloween, i was working on this mini for like THE WHOLE DAY..sewing it, inking it and
when i got home on sunday, I realized Emmy had also colored it and stuck stickers ALL over it.  her and i had to have a discussion about asking if she could touch things first.  humph!

rehearsal tonight for the barnyard musical tomorrow and today is nicks first day of football practice...he'll be exhausted when he gets home.

i still smell the lemon thyme in here...the herbs smelled delicious!

have a happy day

fat lip

ummm...yesterday little cute sweet Madi decided it would be a good idea to wallop me with Sam's sippy cup and give me a big fat old split lip.  Ouch.  so now it hurts to eat and drink and there's a hole on the inside of my lip where I'm thinking my tooth went thru.  thankfully, no teeth were broken, so I'll just nurse my poor sore lip.  these kids HAVE TO STOP throwing things...at me, at each other, at the cats.  sigh....we'll work on that :)

today dawned with a sweet cool little rainstorm to moisten up the soil in my garden that i didn't get to water yesterday. spent the early morning hours drawing up my whole yard plans...not that it will all get done at once, but it's good to have a plan.  Raised bed gardens, a bigger garden for corn and potatoes, strawberry patches, blueberry and raspberry bushes, a little pond and winding mysterious little paths that flow all between them.  Umm, nice to dream, but lots of work.  it will come to fruition...a little at a time.  have some items to drop into my compost pile.  here's a funny, i can't go out there at night, because i'm afraid of the woods!  hubby says he's going to remember that and scare me.  better not.

junking.  on my mind.  love to meander through the aisles and see the displays.  i'm even pretty good at not purchasing anything, just looking.  planning.  so much to do in our house.  not sure what "style" it's going to end up in yet.  it's fun to look at all the different styles of decor.  spent a good hour re discovering hobby lobby yesterday...fun :)

little sam woke about 3 am this morning, crying and screaming.  not sure if it was a bad dream, but he nestled right back into bed with me and fell to sleep.  he was shortly followed by jacob who didn't want to sleep in his room alone for the rest of the night :)  full bed this morning.  work brought hubby home late last night and a meeting took him off early again.  first week of call.  so busy.

plan to use my sewing machine a bit today and it's bed linen washing day...fun!

happy day to you...may u find a little treasure in your day :)

One month!

We have officially lived in Georgia for one month and two days!  Here's what I learned so far.....:)

*no one is in a hurry here.  and if they are, they'll pass you doing 80 mph.
*roads are LOOOOONG!
*i don't like gnats.
*you never really step on a frog because they wiggle under your feet as soon as u do and you hop off!
*the woods is scary at night.  (haha danny)
*a list is a good thing when going to the store so you don't have to turn around and go back
*living here is like a perpetual camping trip.
*the smell of burning pines is awesome.
*a ranch home is awesome.
*laundry room on the first floor is priceless.
*go to a central room with no windows when a tornado is coming, or a murky pond (ewww!)
*Brooklet Elementary is an awesome school!
*people really are nicer in the south!
*there is a church about every mile or so here.  awesome.

friday

feeling a little blue and homesick today.  not sure why.  maybe because i start work tonight, or maybe because Easter is here.  just wish i could shake this feeling of wanting to cry...or maybe i should just cry and let it all out :)

settling in thrifty

Our third week here in Georgia found me exploring some of the odds and ends and thrift shoppes here to see what they had to offer.  I found a sweet little second hand shoppe in Brooklet (K's odds and ends) and there is a hoosier cabinet and a sweet vintage metal stool with a pull out stepladder that I have my eye on.  will definitely be making a trip back there :)  I'm compiling a list of things to look out for as a explore...the biggest being a vintage dining room hutch...I can see it in my mind....never know, may come upon something i love.  stepladders, cloches, hanging lanterns, a pie safe...the list is growing by the minute.  Now this may seem to be going against my grain of simplicity...but I'm trying to keep it for decorative/useful purposes only.  Not nick/nack stuff, more storage and utilitarian needs...

visited the Goodwill today in Statesboro....and found these things.....

sweet little summer dresses for emmy

a few cool dresses for me...this one's reversible and i love the pattern :)

a cute little lantern that i can picture hanging in the tree out front
casting a pretty light onto the darkened yard...

side table...not much to look at now, but i have plans for this....
remember how it looks now and when i finish it i'll post a pic :)
a deal at $12 for what it's going to become...
